Xtool F1 Ultra: 7 Questions Every Admin Buyer Should Ask Before Purchasing

You have the budget, the demand, and the vendor​’s glossy brochure. But what do you actually need to know?

I manage purchasing for a small manufacturing shop—about 30 employees, two locations. When the engineering team asked for a desktop laser engraver that could handle metal parts and acrylic signage, the Xtool F1 Ultra came up fast. To be fair, the pass-through works well for continuous patterns on long materials. But if your team wants to engrave a 12​” x 12​” plaque? Not possible in one pass. You​’ll need to tile the job or use the rotary attachment.

Pro tip: If your orders are mostly small items (keychains, tags, small parts), the bed size is fine. If you need bigger, consider a larger CO2 unit as a secondary machine.

3. Can it really cut metal?

Short answer: yes, but only thin metals. The 20W fiber laser can cut up to about 0.5mm stainless steel or 0.3mm aluminum. Thicker than that? You​’ll need a higher-powered fiber laser.

I tested it on 1mm steel. It took three passes and left burn marks. Was it usable? Barely. Don​’t buy this if your primary use case is cutting thick metal.

The diode laser is great for wood, acrylic, leather, and even some plastics. The fiber laser is for marking and engraving metal parts, not heavy cutting.

4. Does the rotary attachment work for cylindrical items?

Yes—Xtool sells a rotary attachment that fits bottles, glasses, and tubes. The machine recognizes it automatically. I tested it on a stainless steel water bottle, and the engraving came out crisp.

But here​’s a nuance: the rotary attachment adds extra setup time. For small batches (under 20 units), it​’s fine. For larger runs, you might want a dedicated rotary machine.

5. What are the hidden costs I should budget for?

This is where I see most admin buyers get caught. The machine is priced around $2,000–$2,500. But the real cost includes:

  • Enclosure and ventilation: The F1 Ultra doesn​’t come with a built-in fume extractor. You​’ll need an enclosure ($200–$400) and possibly a ventilation kit ($100–$200).
  • Consumables: Fiber laser lenses degrade over time. Expect to replace them every 6–12 months at $50–$100 each.
  • Software licensing: LightBurn license ($60) and possible upgrades.
  • Shipping and duties: Check if your supplier includes shipping. Many don​’t. Add $100–$200 for standard freight.

Bottom line: budget about $2,800–$3,200 total to be safe.

6. Can you laser cut plastic?

Yes, but with caveats. The diode laser (10W blue) can cut acrylic up to 6mm cleanly. Thicker than that? You​’ll get charring. Polycarbonate and PVC are a deal-breaker—they release toxic chlorine gas when lasered.

I learned never to assume a material is safe. Always check the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) before running a new plastic. That mistake cost us $1,200 in damaged optics when we ran polycarbonate without verifying.

7. Who is this machine actually for?

In my opinion, the Xtool F1 Ultra is ideal for:

  • Small laser engraving businesses that want to add metal marking to their portfolio.
  • Workshops that need a dual-purpose machine for both light cutting and detailed engraving.
  • Prototyping shops that want flexibility without a huge footprint.

If your team is primarily cutting thick metal or doing high-volume production, you should look at a dedicated fiber laser (50W+) or a CO2 laser for non-metal work. The F1 Ultra is a jack-of-all-trades, not a specialist.

The vendor who said “this isn​’t our strength​—here​’s who does it better” earned my trust for everything else.

I appreciate that Xtool is upfront about the machine​’s capabilities. They don​’t claim it can cut 5mm steel. That honesty is rare, and it​’s why I chose them over a competitor that promised everything.

If you​’re still on the fence, I​’d say this: test it with your actual materials before committing. Most good suppliers will offer a return window. Use it.
